Over a week ago, I was hired to photograph a man proposing his girlfriend. At first, he wrote me an email to describe his requests. I was quite surprised and excited to receive such a photo request. I’ve been photographing so many couples on their weddings and engagements; yet this time sure was my first time to photograph a surprise proposal. It should be fun and interesting.
His name is Graham. Graham seems to be a very cautious person. He sent me all the information we needed in details, like locations, time… including photos and screen shots from Google. Graham even called me in advance to make sure all the photos he saw on my website www.hakinkin.com were really mine. I told him: “Absolutely”!
Proposing must be really exciting and nervous. Even a careful person like Graham made some mistakes on location and time when emailing me; he said he must be too nervous. That sounded more interesting to me though. I only saw the surprise proposals on TV and in movies. Never saw them in real life!
Finally Graham figured out a good date to do the proposal. It was chilly and windy day in Central Park and he was in the suit shivering waiting for her to arrive. I and my brother had to be there 45 mins earlier to make sure everything and…he will be OK. We were so excited for the outcome.
It was supposed that she would arrive around 5h30 but due to that traffic time, she could not be on time. Graham said he hired a Limousine to take her here from work. And to make sure she would not be suspicious about what he was doing, he called her and made her mad on the phone. Ah, that’s pretty cute!
We had to wait nearly one hour in the cold. I caught the cold but Graham should be more freezing, because he only had the suit on, not to include the excitement would make you ten times colder. There’s a big tree there so me and my brother would “hide” in case she approaches near him later. We definitely did not want her to see what was coming.
Finally she arrived; the sun was already gone so the exposure was a bit off. We moved behind the tree so she wouldn’t notice. She had a rose in her hand. I wonder if she really knew anything.
So here we go, the story would go by stop motions actually. I wanted to make sure that I caught everything. I promised Graham that he was in very good hands! These are just highlights!

Graham’s grandmother’s ring which will be used to propose. That was a surprise proposal, so of course this should be a surprise ring.

Chị HK ơi,bộ ảnh này thú vị và đẹp quá chị àh, đúng là truyền tải đc cả happy của cặp đôi, mà nhìnảnh cũng thấy đc sự bất ngờ và hạnh phúc của “cô dâu”.

“Dữ dội và dịu êm, ồn ào và lặng lẽ” đó là tâm trạng của em khi xem những tấm hình của chị. Có những lúc thấy tâm hồn mình thực sự run rẩy những cung bậc không kiềm chế nổi. Ước gì đó là những phút giây vĩnh viễn tồn tại trong em, nó không bị vùi dập và che lấp bởi những toan tính đời thường. Đã có lúc những tưởng mình không thể có những cảm xúc xa xỉ như thế nữa. Nhưng những gì chị đã làm thực sự truyền cảm hứng cho em rất nhiều. Để biết hạnh phúc đôi khi không phải là từ mình và cho mình mà có những lúc là được biết xung quanh mình nhiều người hạnh phúc. Gửi đến chị lời chúc chân thành cho mọi thứ.

Thank you for sharing this amazing and beautiful moment! Graham is my cousin’s son – my father’s sister’s grandson – and is a truly beautiful man. I’m so happy he has Holly to share his life. I live in the Southwest and do not see Graham very often but looking at your amazing pictures and reading your story I feel that I was magically connected to a beautiful moment in the life of someone close to my heart. Thank you for that!

Did you purposely leave a lighter color spot in front of his forehead? It distracts a bit but overall it’s very nice pix.

em như nhìn thấy mình trong từng cách tả về cảm xúc của mình của chị HK. em là 1 cô bé có những suy nghĩ rất giống chị, từ cái cách kiên nhẫn làm bằng được điều mình mún,…nhìu nhìu cái suy nghĩ giống như nhân vật HK trong truyện. mỗi cái là em ko là 1 cô gái xinh đẹp và tự tin như chị(có khi ngược lại nữa hihi) mắt ko to, môi ko dày, còn cái này : anh văn và mỹ thuật là 2 môn em thích và khá nhất hihi đọc xong truyện em sẽ cố gắng tự tin hơn và mỗi khi có chuyện gì em ko bao h chia sẻ với ai, e sợ gì đó e ko biết nữa nhưng em sẽ cố gắng chia sẽ cảm xúc với ngừi khác, em củm mún làm những điều điên rồ và hoang dại hihi ví dụ như lần đầu tiên comment cho blog của ai đó, ước mơ của em là sang mỹ du học nên phả học cách tự tin hơn về bản thân mình nữa chứ hihi, em ko biết chị có trả lời ko nhưng em chỉ biết là em đang cười:)
Hi chị, I was so impressed by the album of your sister I saw today. She and the beautiful pictures got me to go ahead and explore your work. Proposals do not make me cry, not really. Even videos from flash mob proposals, surprise proposals, but viewing this in your “slow motion” I felt like I was actually standing there observing this magical moment. Thank you for sharing the way you see the world. It’s beautiful and marvelous.
